Best Ergonomic IPL hair removal tool with added skin rejuvination light
The latest craze in hair removal is IPL: Intense Pulsed Light. Owing to improved light technology, hand held devices that can provide the requisite intensity light to perform IPL at home and at an affordable price are now available.I've tried a number of these IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) devices for hair removal.At this point, I can say that these IPL devices all work pretty similarly, with only a few differnces separating them. Among the most significant differences:** Does the device only address hair removal, or does it also promise to do "skin rejuvenation" or help with acne?** Does the device offer the "ice" functionality, where a heat-sink near the flash head reduces the effective heat at the skin** Does the device offer a LCD readout of info such as number of flashses left, power level, etc** What are the ergonomics of the device itself: Gun shaped or tube shaped or...?** Does the device include attachments that modify the shape/size of the head for focused use in places like the lips?** What is the maximum number of flashes for which the device is rated (most devices are rated for 500,000-1,000,000 flashes, which is equivalent to a lifetime)If all you need is hair removal, just about all the devices offer that, and should provide equivalent functionality.This is a mid-priced unit that, nonetheless, adds a second flash element that is meant for skin rejuvination to the standard light for hair removal.Specifics of this IPL device:** Attachments for HR (Hair Removal) and SR (Skin Rejuvination)** No ICE skin cooling functionality** LCD screen** Comfortable gun shape** No attachments to change the flash end shape** Rated a bit over 300,000 flashes, 5 power levels.Operation is pretty trivial:1) Pick one of the two light elements and connect it to the front of the gun. It comes with the hair removal element (yellow) pre-installed.
To switch the element, you pull the light assembly at the front of the gun straight off, then put the other element in its place.2) Attach the power cord to the IPL gun and plug it into the wall (the hair removal gun is NOT battery operated--you must have it plugged in). You plug in the base, then attach a cord from the base to the hair removal tool. (The hair removal tool is NOT battery operated; you must have it plugged in)3) Turn on the gun via the power button on the LCD screen4) Choose the power level to use (you have five levels, and you cycle through them using short pushes of the power button)5) Place the front end of the gun against the skin you are trying to treat and push the trigger button. (You can also put the gun in "auto" mode, where it flashes every time it is pushed against skin. To put it into auto mode, hold the trigger for 3 seconds). There is a few second refractory periods after flashing before you can flash again.The light is extremely powerful and could damage your eyes with continued direct exposure. Therefore, you should never look directly into the light and a cheap pair of folding protective eyeglasses are included in the box.The light is triggered by a touch-sensitive area in the front of the device. 
Using very slow-motion photography, I was able to capture a snapshot of the light (see photos). But the light duration is extremely short.You run the tool over the area where you want to remove hair and make sure you expose all the hair follicles in that region. You will not see any immediate results.
The light signals your hair to stop growing, but it requires multiple treatments over several weeks before you will be expected to see results. Eventually, you should find a substantial reduction in the hair in the treated areas.In the box, you get the tool, a power cord, a pair of eye protection glasses, two light-type attachments, plus instructions. You also get an additional two international plug adapters if you wish to use this in another country. This tool is rated for more than 300,000 flashes. (So it should probably last longer than your interest in it).The two light type attachments that come with this are:HR (Hair Removal) (yellow)SR (Skin Rejuvenation) (red)These attachments are different from the attachments I've encountered in most IPL kits. Most attachments appear to be simple light filters, with the light element built into the gun. Here, the light element is built into the attachment (one light element for each attachment). This has the potential advantage that if the light element burned out, you could easily replace it (assuming you can find a replacement).I tested the HR attachment and it works as expected. These attachments attach to the front of this device and emit different wavelengths of light. The device will not work without one of these attachments in place. There's not much detailed information on what the SR filter in the kit actually does. Generally, hair removal is performed in the 640-900nm range. And "rejuvenation" is performed in the 550-900nm range. So you can assume these filters focus the light in those ranges. Skin rejuvenation is purported to help with things like rosacea, various pigmentation issues, broken capillary discoloration, etc.
The effectiveness of these various skin rejuvenation applications, outside of hair removal, is still the subject of some discussion.One thing you don't get with this tool is any attachments that can make it easier to address certain body areas. Some IPL removal tools include these. 
The actual value of such tools is subject to debate and the fundamental functionality (which is a flash of high-intensity light) does not change. The lamp attachments are not marked, although they are described in the accompanying manual (yellow = hair removal, red = skin rejuvenation). I wish the manufacturer had clearly marked the attachments since you could lose the manual.I'll note that this kit is a bit more expensive than some IPL devices that only provide an attachment for hair removal and omit the LCD readout. For those who only need that functionality, there may be more cost effective alternatives. But this is a good option if you also want to try the skin rejuvination functionality.
